1. Check Out the First Generation CX-5
The Mazda CX-5 is a relatively new addition to the automobile world. The first generation of the CX-5 was produced from 2013 to 2016 and offered spacious rear seating, easy access, excellent handling, and an impressive level of standard features. In 2014, a 2.5-liter engine was introduced, upping the horsepower to 184 and offering 185 pound-feet of torque. The 2.5-liter only came paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. If you opted for all-wheel drive in any first-generation model, you also had to stick with the automatic transmission.
2. Consider a Second Generation CX-5
Mazda is currently producing the second generation of the CX-5, which started in 2017. While it may not seem like a lot changed with this second generation, the tweaks to the interior and exterior made a huge difference, making the CX-5 a standout in the small SUV lineup. Squinty headlights and a new front grille gave the second generation a distinctive, cutting-edge look. Interior upgrades made the CX-5 downright luxurious.
The standard engine for the second generation is a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder that produces 187 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. A few months after the initial launch of the second-generation CX-5 in 2017, a second engine was added. That option is a 2.2-liter turbodiesel offering 147 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. In 2019, Mazda added a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that puts out 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Mazda abandoned the manual transmission in 2017, with a six-speed automatic standard on all second-generation models.
3. Know That the CX-5 Holds Value
A used Mazda CX-5 still holds a lot of its original value because it’s such a standout vehicle in its field. Depending on the condition, trim level, and mileage, you can expect to get a 2013 model between $7,695 to $16,995. A 2017 second-generation CX-5 costs between $14,989 and $26,999, while a 2019 can be available for $14,990 to $35,998. You can also expect to save money at the pump with a used CX-5 averaging 27 to 29 mpg combined. Overall, the CX-5 is an excellent value for a used vehicle.
