What is Transmission Service?

Transmission service is an often-overlooked part of routine car maintenance. Transmission service typically consists of flushing out old transmission fluid with new fluid. Transmission fluid serves as a lubricant for the moving parts inside your vehicle’s transmission, and even serves as a coolant in vehicles with an automatic transmission fluid. Over time that lubricant becomes contaminated with different particles from vehicle use as gears and metal bearings begin to wear down. Additionally, transmission fluid can degrade break down over time. Not getting transmission service can significantly shorten the life of the vehicle’s transmission and result in costly repairs.

How Often Should You Get Transmission Service?

How often you should get transmission service largely depends on if your vehicle has an automatic or manual transmission, as there are different moving parts involved and require different transmission fluid. Vehicles with an automatic transmission should get service every 60,000 to 100,000 miles while vehicles with a manual transmission should get service every 30,000 to 60,000 miles.
