Narragansett, RIRhode Island is a small state filled with many fabulous attractions. Anywhere in the area is an excellent destination for an excursion. From surfing to shopping, check out these highly recommended Wakefield day trips.

1. Jamestown on Conanicut Island

The charming small town of Jamestown is located in Narragansett Bay on Conanicut Island. It’s one of the largest island retreats in the Bay and is accessible from the east side of the mainland by the Claiborne Pell Bridge or by the Jamestown-Verrazano Bridge to the west.

You’ll find classic New England style restaurants in the center of town, serving up their seafood specialties. Enjoy the comfortable, casual, atmosphere at Chopmist Charlie’s or stop by the Randall Art Gallery for a cultural experience. This two-story building features special exhibits showcasing the works of a dozen local and regional artists.

2. Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park

Whether you are interested in learning more about the Valley’s history or you want to walk along the peaceful canal, discover the many ways to enjoy Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park. There’s plenty to see and do at this terrific Rhode Island day trip destination.

Paddle your way down the picturesque stream, take a bike ride through the park, or visit the Captain Wilbur Kelly House Transportation Museum. Launch your boat and try your hand at the area’s top fishing spots, then spread your blanket under a tree for a picnic. If you have time, make your way across the bikeway bridge and explore the historic Ashton Mill Village.

3. Narragansett

Narragansett is a beautiful seaside town filled with marvelous natural attractions, perched on the eastern banks of the Pettaquamscutt River. It’s the ideal spot to soak up the sun, go surfing off of Scarborough Beach, or take a drive down Ocean Road and go antiquing along the coast.

4. Roger Williams Park and Zoo in Providence

Founded in 1872, Roger Williams Park and Zoo in Providence is one of the oldest zoos in the nation. Enjoy a variety of up-close and personal encounters with more than 150 animal residents from around the world. Have a bite to eat at the concessions and climb aboard a thrilling ride.

5. Downtown Newport

Newport is a historic New England city and a wildly popular tourist destination known for Bellevue Avenue’s gilded-age mansions and its yacht-filled harbor. It touts world-class museums, restaurants, bars, and other charming attractions. Stop by The Breakers, a famous 1895 mansion that’s reminiscent of a Renaissance palace, or just take a cliff walk along the beach.

6. Block Island

All aboard a ferry to Block Island. With its diverse number of attractions, you’ll be glad you visited this magical place. Just south of mainland Rhode Island, it touts beachside bluffs and nature reserves, plus a 1800s red-brick Southeast Lighthouse. Spend the day on the sands of Crescent Beach and bird-watch at Block Island National Wildlife Refuge.
