Mazda is poised to make some serious moves in the coming year. For the past decade, the Japanese automaker achieved success by following a simple formula. It crafted affordable, well-made cars with a luxury feel around a set of principles known as the Kodo design language. Building on its well-earned brand reputation, the company is ready to switch gears and break into new markets. Here is just some of what’s in store for the Mazda lineup in 2022.

1. Mazda Will Release the MX-30, Its First All-Electric Vehicle

With concern over climate change mounting and environmental consciousness growing, car manufacturers are feeling the pressure to roll out more eco-friendly autos to respond to the rising consumer demand, and Mazda is no exception. The company recently released its 10-year strategy for more sustainable vehicles, which calls for the rollout of several new hybrid and battery-powered models between now and 2030.
The first step of this plan will begin next year. Mazda is set to join Tesla and other big names in the electric vehicle industry with its first all-electric vehicle. The MX-30 SUV runs on a 35.5-kilowatt-hour, lithium-ion battery that can reach a full charge in less than an hour with DC power charging. In tests, the European model has achieved a range of up to 124 miles on a full battery. The all-electric powertrain generates 144 horsepower and 200 pounds-feet of torque.

2. The New CX-5 SUV Will Come to North America by Year’s End

There’s a lot of buzz around Mazda’s CX-5. Executives announced that the popular crossover SUV will be coming to North America sometime before the end of next year. In line with Mazda’s sustainability strategy, the revamped model will feature the company’s patented Skyactiv-X technology, which improves fuel efficiency up to 30 percent. The CX-5 will be the first to use a high-efficiency inline-six engine.
These features are expected to move the CX-5 upmarket, helping it compete with luxury SUV models like the BWM X5, further solidifying Mazda’s reputation as the “BMW of Japan.”

3. The Mazda2 and CX-3 Will be All-New

Famed for its agility and tight handling, the Mazda2 subcompact hatchback and its SUV counterpart the CX-3 will be getting an upgrade in the coming model year. The former is set to debut by the end of this year, while the CX-3 is going to make its first appearance next summer. Both will see improvements to their already fuel-efficient 4-cylinder engines through the addition of Skyactiv-X.

4.  Return of the Mazda6?

Many were heartbroken when Mazda announced this year that they were discontinuing the beloved Mazda6 sedan. However, it’s rumored that Mazda will release a new model of sedans with rear-wheel drive and an inline-six engine next year in a bid to challenge BMW in that market as it has in other segments. If that happens, it would officially be part of the 2023 model year and could possibly carry a different name.
