Compare the Mazda CX-3 and Mazda CX-5

Mazda's CX-3 and CX-5 offer comfort, fuel efficiency, and loads of tech features. If you are trying to decide between the CX-3 and CX-5, here are some important features to consider.

Interior

Both the CX-3 and CX-5 feature a comfortable interior with many high-end finishes. Controls are easy to reach and user-friendly. Cloth upholstery is standard on both the CX-3 and CX-5. The higher trim packages on both vehicles are outfitted with leather seats, heated front seats, and leather-wrapped steering wheels.While both the CX-3 and CX-5 can hold five passengers, the CX-5 has a slightly roomier cabin than the CX-3. Rear seat passengers will most notice the difference in cabin space. With the rear seat upright, the CX-3 has 12.4 cubic feet of cargo space, while the CX-5 has 30.9 cubic feet of space. Folding down the 60/40 split-folding rear seats increases the CX-3's cargo space to 44.5 cubic feet and the CX-5's cargo area to 59.6 cubic feet. Infotainment features are very similar between the Mazda CX-3 and CX-5. Both models are equipped with the Mazda Connect infotainment system, which includes a 7-inch touch screen, Bluetooth connectivity, and USB ports. The CX-5 adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to its list of features.

Engines

A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine pumping 148 horsepower comes standard under the hood of the Mazda CX-3. The Mazda CX-5 is equipped with a 187-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Additional engines available for the higher end CX-5 models include a 227-horsepower, turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, and a 168-horsepower turbo diesel engine. Every engine is paired with Mazda's SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission.

Performance

Front-wheel drive is standard on most CX-3 and CX-5 trim packages, with all-wheel drive as an available option. The higher-end CX-5 trims (including the Grand Touring Reserve and Signature models) are equipped with all-wheel drive only. Both the CX-3 and CX-5 are gasoline sippers with great fuel economy. The CX-3 has an EPA-estimated fuel efficiency of 27 miles per gallon in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. The fuel economy of the CX-5 Sport model is slightly less, but still impressive, with a rating of 25 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

Safety Features

Both the CX-3 and CX-5 are safe vehicles. The CX-5 is a Top Safety Pick+. Both vehicles are equipped with a suite of advanced airbags, three-point seat belts for all seating positions, and LATCH safety system. Driver-assist features on both models include dynamic stability control, traction control, brake assist, hill launch assist, Smart City brake support, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and a rearview camera. Higher-end trims of the CX-5 also include a lane departure warning with lane keep assist, rear and front parking sensors, advanced Smart City brake support with pedestrian detection, Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go, and a 360-degree view monitor.
