Does Your Mazda Need a Replacement Catalytic Converter?

vehicle exhaust system

The catalytic converter is a mysterious component for many drivers. Convertors have been standard on all cars in the US since 1975. Despite this, most drivers never see it and never think about it. The convertor's purpose is to change harmful exhaust pollutants into less harmful ones. They mix oxygen with unburnt hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide and turn the mix into carbon dioxide and water. The convertor can fail, and when it does your Mazda dealer can replace it for you.

Sulfur Smell

Fuel contains a sight smell of sulfur. In your combustion chamber fuel and air mix in a precise ratio, and the spark plugs ignite this mix. The series of controlled explosions that result from this process moves your car. The process also produces unburnt hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and other harmful byproducts as waste. These gases are forced out of the chamber through your exhaust system.

These harmful gases pass through the converter before they leave the exhaust pipe. When the converter is working correctly, it changes these chemicals and removes the smell of sulfur. A strong smell of sulfur is a sign that your converter has failed.

Engine Running Too Hot

A working converter reduces the heat in your combustion chamber by converting and removing harmful chemicals. If your converter is weakening, it becomes less efficient. The quantity of chemical waste and the amount of heat that's removed from your engine will drop. The heat that's not removed from the chamber will increase the temperature and pressure in your engine.

A higher engine temperature and increased pressure in the funnel and cylinders can cause serious damage. Gaskets, hoses, and seals in your engine can all be damaged by the increased heat.

Poor Performance

A damaged converter won't break down the harmful chemicals efficiently. This can lead to a buildup of carbon in the convertor. This buildup will block the convertor, and the backpressure will increase in your engine. This pressure will reduce your engine's performance, and it can clog your pistons. When you step on the accelerator, the backpressure will limit you to approximately 30-40 mph.

Reduced Fuel Efficiency

The convertor releases oxygen into your engine as part of its conversion process. If the converter fails, this extra oxygen won't be available. The reduced oxygen supply will cause your engine to burn more fuel. This wasted fuel will be noticeable when you have to make extra trips to the gas station.

Check Engine Light

The check engine light doesn't specifically mean you have a converter problem. Sensors are attached to all the important components in your car to monitor them. The problems caused by a worn-out convertor will trigger the sensors.

A failed converter increases pollution and can cause serious damage to your engine and exhaust systems. It's also illegal to drive without a working converter. If you see signs your convertor is failing, call us immediately at Flood Mazda and we'll replace it.
